Nico: Ah... äh...

Sales lady: Junger Mann, es warten andere Leute. Was soll es sein?

Shopper 1: Tut mir Leid, weiss ich nicht. Vielleicht dort hinten?

Sorry, I don’t know. Back there perhaps?

Nico: Danke.

Shopper 2: Da vorne, unter dem Joghurt.

Sie sind keine Deutschen. Sie leben aber in Deutschland.

They aren’t German but they live in Germany.

Menschen aus aller Welt.

People from all over the world.

So auch Shirin und Wladimir. Sie ist aus dem Iran. Er ist mit seiner Frau aus der Ukraine gekommen.

Like Shirin and Vladimir. She’s from Iran. He and his family are from the Ukraine.

Vom Sozialamt Köln kriegt jeder die selbe Summe – DM 400 pro Person pro Monat.

At the DSS in Cologne everyone gets the same amount of money: 400 DM per person per month.

Hier sind alle gleich, aber ihre Schicksale sind unterschiedlich.

Here, everyone’s equal, but what happens to them all is different.

Wladimir und seine Frau Karina sind seit zwei Jahren hier. Auf der Suche nach einer neuen Lebensperspektive kamen sie nach Deutschland. 

 

 

Vladimir and his wife have been here for two years. They came to Germany in search of a new perspective for their lives.

Ihr Asylantrag läuft noch, aber als Wirtschaftsflüchtlinge haben sie keine Chance, in der Bundesrepublik anerkannt zu werden. 

Their application for asylum is still being processed, but as just ‘economic’ refugees they have no real prospect of being allowed to settle here. 

Shirin hingegen musste aus politischen Gründen ihre Heimat im Iran verlassen.

Shirin, on the other hand, had to leave her home in Iran for political reasons.

Ihr Mann wurde erschossen. Sie selbst saß zwei Jahre im Gefängnis, wo sie auch gefoltert wurde.

Her husband was shot. She spent two years in prison, wher she was also tortured. 

Um etwas Sinnvolles zu tun, repariert Wladimir alte Elektrogeräte. Vom Beruf ist er Elektroingenieur. 

In order to keep himself occupied, Vladimir repairs old electrical appliances. He is a qualified electrical engineer.

Eine Arbeit hat er bisher nicht gefunden, denn mit der deutschen Sprache hat er Schwierigkeiten.

He hasn’t been able to find paid work yet, because he has difficulty with the German language. 

Vladimir: Sprech ich Französisch, Englisch, auch Russisch, das ist meine Muttersprache. Außerdem das ist zu schwer, eine richtige Job zu finden. Weil ich kein gut Deutsch spreche noch.

I speak French, English and Russian, my mother tongue. lt’s very hard to find a proper job, because I don’t speak good German yet.

Anders als die beiden Ukrainer möchte Shirin irgendwann wieder in ihre Heimat zurückkehren. 

Unlike the two Ukrainians, Shirin would like to return home at some stage in the future.

Annette, Dieter, das ist Nicolai Antonescu - unser neuer Kollege. Er ist aus Rumänien, aber er spricht schon sehr gut Deutsch.

Annette: Wir kennen uns ja schon.
