Deutsch Plus – Programme 19

Commentary: Nico’s up and about again. He was beaten up and had to go into hospital. Then he tried to help the police. Who still don’t trust him.

Kretschmer: Nun Herr Antonescu? Finden Sie den Mann nicht? Oder wollen Sie ihn nicht finden?
Well, Herr Antonescu? Can’t you find the man? Or don’t you want to find him?

OUTSIDE POLICE STATION
Anna: Nico, hallo. Wie geht’s? Tut es noch weh?
Hi Nico. How’re things? Does it still hurt?
Nico: Nur ein bisschen.
Just a bit.
Anna: Komm, lass uns fahren.
Come, let’s go. You must tell me about the police.

INSIDE CAR
And at the police station I had to look at loads of photos.
Anna: Na und? Hast du den Mann wiedererkannt?
And? Did you recognise the man?
Nico: Ja.
Yes.
Anna: Also, die Polizei kannte ihn schon?
So the police already knew him, then?
Nico: Ja. Die sagten, er hat schon mal jemand...
Yes. They said it wasn’t the first time he had…
Anna: Geschlagen.
Beaten someone up.
Nico: Ja, geschlagen. Ja, und jetzt suchen sie den Mann.
Yes, beaten up. Now they’re looking for the man.
Well, hopefully they’ll find him soon. The police will have to give you protection.
Nico: Mich!? Ich bin doch nur Ausländer!
Me?! But I’m only a foreigner!
You probably think that all Germans are hostile to foreigners - and many are!
Nico: Quatsch! (Anna fondles his knee) Hey, Hände ans Lenkrad!
Rubbish! Most of the Germans I know are really nice - Elke, Ulli, the Putz  family...  and you. Hey, hands on the wheel. It’s good that the car is OK again.
Anna: Ja. Aber ich bin jetzt pleite.
Yes, but now I’m broke.
Nico: Pleite?
Broke?
I haven’t got any money. I’d like a new car but I can’t afford it.
And I can’t afford an old car!
Anna: Mensch, ich muss tanken.
Oh no, I must get some petrol.
Nico: Da ist ja eine Tankstelle.
There’s a petrol station right there.
Anna: Prima!
Brilliant!
Nico: Bleifrei oder Super Bleifrei?
Unleaded or super unleaded?
Anna: Super Bleifrei. Aber Benzin nur für vierzig Mark.
Ich bin ja pleite! Ich komme gleich wieder.
Super unleaded. But for no more than forty marks. I’m broke! I’ll be right back.
Nico: OK. (Starts filling tank) Fünf... zehn... fünfzehn... zwanzig... dreißig... fünfunddreißig... achtunddreißig... vierzig!
OK. Five... ten... fifteen... twenty.... thirty… thirty-five... thirty-eight… forty!

DRIVING ALONG IN CAR
Nico: Schön!
It’s lovely!
I told you so! It’s beautiful scenery, isn’t it? We need to turn right at the traffic lights there, and then we’re nearly there!
What should I say when we get there?
Anna: Na, ,Hallo!’ oder ,Guten Tag!’ oder...
Well, ‘Hello’ or ‘Good day’ or…
Nico: Und was ist damit? (He points to his injuries) Was wirst du sagen?
And what about this? What will you say?
Anna: Weißt du was?! Die Wahrheit!
Do you know what? The truth!
Nico: Bist du sicher?
Are you sure?
Anna: Ja.
Yes. Look over there. That’s the church wher my mother and father got married.
Nico: Und wirst du auch da heiraten?
Will you get married there too?
Anna: Wer weiß?
Who knows?

AT THE DANIELS’ HOUSE
Walter, Anna’s here and she’s brought a friend with her. This is Herr Antonescu.
Herr Daniels: Hallo, Mäuschen. (to Nico) Willkommen!
Alle Freunde von Anna sind immer willkommen.
Hello, Poppet. Welcome! Any friend of Anna is always welcome.
Nico: Nico Antonescu.
Nico Antonescu. Pleased to meet you, Herr Daniels. Anna has told me a great deal about you and Frau Daniels.
Frau Daniels: Und schau mal, WaIter, was für schöne Blumen mir Herr Antonescu gebracht hat.
Look, Walter, what lovely flowers Herr Antonescu has given me.
Nico: Nur eine Kleinigkeit.
Oh, it’s nothing.
Herr Daniels: Aber Herr Antonescu, was ist denn passiert? Hatten Sie einen Unfall? (Nico finds it difficult to answer, so Herr Daniels changes the subject) Kommen Sie, Herr Antonescu. Setzen Sie sich.
What happened to you, Herr Antonescu? Have you had an accident? Come and sit down, Herr Antonescu.
Nico: Vielen Dank, Herr Daniels.
Thank you, Herr Daniels.
Nico came to Germany from Romania six months ago.
Frau Daniels: Was! Sie sind erst sechs Monate hier? Sie sprechen aber sehr gut Deutsch!
What! You’ve only been here for six months? Your German is very good!
Nico: Danke!
Thank you!
I’ll just put the flowers in water, then we can eat.
Anna: Ich helfe dir, Mama.
I’ll give you a hand, Mum.
Nico: Es ist sehr gemütlich bei Ihnen, Herr Daniels.
It’s very cosy here, Herr Daniels.
Is it the flrst time you’ve been to the Bergische Land?
Nico: Ja. Die Landschaft ist sehr schön.
Yes. The countryside is very beautiful.

DINING-ROOM, AFTER THE MEAL
Nico: Nochmals vielen Dank. Das Essen war sehr lecker.
Well, thank you once again. That was delicious.
Would you like a nice cup of coffee now?
Nico: Ja, sehr gerne. Ich liebe deutschen Kaffee.
Yes, please. I love German coffee.
Anna: Kann ich machen, Mama.
I’ll do it, Mum.
Frau Daniels: Lass mal. WaIter, es ist schon fast halb drei.
It's ok. Walter, it’s almost half past two already.
Herr Daniels: Seid ihr mir böse? Ich wolIte mir etwas im Fernsehen anschauen. Es dauert nur eine halbe Stunde.
You don’t mind, do you? I wanted to watch something on television. It only lasts half an hour.
Geh. Ich bring dir dann deinen Kaffee.
Of course we don’t mind, Dad. Go and watch. I’ll bring you your coffee.
Herr Daniels: Danke, Mäuschen.
Thank you, Poppet.
Anna: Na?
Well?
Nico: Na?
And?
Anna: Wie gefälIt dir mein Zuhause?
How do you like my home?
Nico: Sehr. Und deine EItern sind super nett.
Very much. And your parents are really nice.
They like you too. But then you are terrific! When I think of your first day at
PRIMA PLUS! You’ve learnt so much in those few months.
Frau Daniels: Und jetzt erzähl’ mir mal, Nico, wer hat dich geschlagen? Oder war es ein Unfall?
So tell me, Nico. Who beat you tip? Or was it an accident?
Nico: Nein, Frau Daniels, es war kein Unfall. Aber es ist eine sehr lange Geschichte.
No, Frau Daniels, it wasn’t an accident. But it’s a very long story.
Anna: Soll ich Papa erst seinen Kaffee bringen?
Shall I take the coffee to Dad first?
Frau Daniels: Nein. Machen wir nachher. Erzähl doch mal.
No, we’ll do that later. Tell me all!
Well, when I first came to Cologne I was lonely. I didn’t have any money. I used to go into a kiosk sometimes, and I got talking with some people there...

HERR DANIELS WATCHING TV documentARY
Just a few kilometres south of Regensburg looms the magnificent building of the Walhalla, visible for miles around.
150 years ago the Bavarian King Ludwig 1 had this famous temple built in Greek style.
It’s become an expression in stone of the national striving for identity and was a response to the triumphant progress of the French Emperor Napoleon through Europe.
In these halls the greatest Germans of all time were to be immortalised in marble. But who are the greatest Germans?
Greatness is relative. Greatness is a question of viewpoint or of perspective.
Anyone who has done great works and has been dead for long enough should, according to Ludwig, have a place in this Pantheon.
123 Auserwählte wurden bisher für würdig befunden. Goethe und Schiller sind dabei, Politiker, Wissenschaftler, Künstler und Musiker.
Up to now 123 people have been chosen as worthy. Goethe and Schiller are among them, as are politicians, scientists, artists and musicians.
Aber was macht denn nun wahrhaftige deutsche Größe aus?
But what really constitutes German greatness?
‘Heute?
‘Today? It doesn’t mean much to me today.’
‘Na nicht groß, also er müsste, naja, was soll man sagen?’
‘Great? He would have to, er, well, what can you say?’
,Herrjeh, deutsche Größe, die Eigenschaft der Tüchtigkeit.
‘I can’t say. I haven’t really thought about it.’
No one knows exactly, but everyone asks themselves.
only two things seem to be certain: greatness is a matter of intellect and it seems to be only found in men.
This is a woman’s foot. The lady to whom it belongs does actually have a head, but she only needs it to keep the roof up.
The Government of Bavaria, which decides who should be allowed into the Valhalla, has, it seems, not found a suitable politician for more than 100 years.
Bismarck, the iron chancellor, was the last politician who was allowed in.
Since then we’ve been waiting in vain for a politician to find his place on the marble ledge.
The last intellectual giant was the physicist Albert Einstein, who was immortalised here in 1990. He was a Jew and emigrated to America to escape from the Nazis. What we’ve all learnt from him is that greatness is relative.
Nowadays many Germans have mixed feelings about such pompous  demonstrations of national ‘greatness’.
History has taught them that national arrogance can turn into barbarity and lead to ruin.
The consequences of the Nazis’ reign of terror are still in evidence today, especially in the Jewish community.
Straubing on the Danube. Up until World War II it had an active Jewish community. Two-thirds of its members emigrated or didn’t survive the Holocaust.
The synagogue, destroyed in 1938 by the Nazis, was only renovated a few years ago. There had been no money to do it earlier. The few people who meet at the weekly Sabbath ceremony are the only survivors from their families. There are hardly any young believers, and those who exist moved to the cities a long time ago.
The congregation makes an effort to stay in being - in Straubing there are only 40 members left. Ignatz Hoffmann, saved from a concentration camp at the end of the war, is the honorary president of the community today.
He is actively supported by his secretary, 93-year-old Herta Wenger.
Ignatz Hoffmann tried for a long time to introduce young life into the elderly congregation, and now it looks as if a solution has been found.
Jewish refugees from the former Soviet unio are to be housed in Straubing. 30 people have already arrived and have been put up in a hostel. Most of them had to wait a year or more for their identity cards.
In order to be able to adapt to their new surroundings, the new arrivals will have to learn German as soon as possible, and to find jobs and somewher to live.
The refugees’ main worry is their professional and financial situation. They’ve almost all got good qualifications, but they’re not likely to find a job in Germany at their own level because of the glut of graduates on the market.
Even the Jewish culture is foreign to most of them. Most of them are barely familiar with the customs and traditions of their religion, because in the atheistic Soviet unio they weren’t able to practise their religion.
So the Russian Jews have it twice as hard: they have to integrate into two cultures at the same time - the Jewish and the German.
