Herr Antonescu! I’m glad I caught you. We must talk. I was at the police yesterday.
Nico: Ja? Und?
Yes? And?
I told the Inspector that you don’t know anything about the drugs.
Nico: Vielen Dank, Frau Weiss.
Many thanks, Frau Weiss.
Yes, but police want the man...  the man with the long hair. When and wher are you meeting this man?
Nico: Am Sonntag, im Rheinpark.

NICO’S ATTENTION IS CAUGHT BY A TRANSMISSION MONITOR
Und wie hast du das Zimmer gefunden?
And how did you find the room?
Through an advert. Well, we put an advert in the paper.
Wie schwierig war das? Wie lange hast du darauf gewartet?
How difficult was it? How long did you have to wait?
lt was quite quick - within a week.
Woher kommst du? Was studierst du? Und wo wohnst du?
wher do you come from? What are you studying? And wher do you live?
I come from Somalia. I’m studying politics, political science, and I’ve been living in Germany for the last five years.
Have you got a little flat or how did you find your flat?
I’m living in a student hall of residence near here, in Ginnbeimer Landstrasse, and it was very hard to get a room here. I had to wait a year for this room because there are so many students, overseas students, who have to wait as much as two years. So I found it hard to find a room.
Do overseas students have more problems finding a flat than German students?
Also ungefähr dieselben Fragen: Woher kommst du? Was machst du und wo wohnst du?
Yes, indeed. There are so many overseas students, like me, for example, and when I came here I had to wait for a year. Every day I went to students’ unio and asked, but if a German student goes there, he only needs to wait two or three months.
Then be gets a room. That’s the difference. OK, virtually the same questions. wher do you come from? What do you do and wher do you live? Well, I come from Frankfurt and I’m studying political science and law here in Frankfurt. I’m living at home with my parents and I gave up looking for a flat straightaway.
Woher kommst du? Was studierst du und wo wohnst du?
wher are you from? What are you studying and wher do you live?

Nico, did you manage to see Frau Weiss?
Nico: Ja. Hast du...
Yes. Did you...
Nico, I’ve got an appointment for you. Today, late afternoon at about five o’clock we’re going to see the Putz family. They may have a room for you.
Nico: Danke, Ulli. (to UIli and Anna) Ihr seid beide so nett zu mir.
Thanks, Ulli. You’re both so nice to me.

(Nico is Iooking troubled) Was ist los? Hast du ein Problem?
Thanks very much. You know what, you can help me - take the pad there and make some notes... What’s the matter? Have you got a problem?
Nico: Ja, ein Problem mit Deutsch.
Yes, a problem with German.
Elke: Na, schieß los!
Fire away!
Nico: Wie bitte?
I beg your pardon?
Elke: Was ist dein Problem?
What’s your problem?
Nico: Ach so! Ja, also das Verb ist ,aufschreiben’, richtig?
The verb is ,to write down', isn’t it?
Elke: Richtig.
Right.
Nico: Aber du sagst ,Schreib etwas auf’. Warum?
But you say ‘Write something down’. Why?
So, und nun komm’ her.
Yes, there are these funny verbs which consist of two parts. There are lots of them: ‘to listen to’, ‘to come along’, ‘to ring up’, ... lots. You just have to learn them. Now come here...
Nico (to himself): Komm her ... herkommen. Komm her, herkommen. Prima!
Come here... to come here. Come here... to come here... Great!
Hülya: Und nun zu unserem Film...
And now to our film...
