ANNA’S HOUSE - ULLI’S HELPING NICO MOVE HIS BELONGINGS

UIIi: Du kannst deinen Mantel auf den Koffer legen.

You can put your coat on the case.

Anna: Und wo sitze ich?

And wher do I sit?

UIli: Ach, du kommst mit?

Oh, are you coming?

Anna: Sicher!

Of course!

Nico: Ich kann hinten sitzen.

I can sit in the back.

Anna: OK. Worauf warten wir?

OK. What are we waiting for?

UIIi: Auf nichts!

OUTSIDE THE PUTZ HOUSE

Marlene: Hallo, Ulli!

Hello, Ulli.

UIIi: Hallo, Marlene. Grüß dich. Darf ich dir Anna Daniels vorstellen?

Hello, Marlene. Hi. May I introduce Anna Daniels?

Marlene: Freut mich sehr. Ulli hat viel von dir erzählt.

A pleasure. Ulli has told me lots about you.

Anna: Hallo.

UlIi: Und das ist Nico.

And this is Nico.

Marlene: Willkommen, Nico. Ich hoffe, du wirst dich bei uns wohlfühlen.

Welcome, Nico. I hope you’ll feel at home with us.

Nico: Ja, ganz bestimmt.

Definitely.

Marlene: Na, kommt herein. Was kann ich denn abnehmen?

Come on in. What can I carry?

Anna: Vielleicht das?

Perhaps this?

Marlene: Komm, gib mir beides. Bringt einfach alles herein. Dann trinken wir zusammen einen Tee.

Come on, give me both of them. Just stick it all inside. Then we’ll have a cup of tea.

 

PUTZ HOUSE - ON TERRACE

Marlene: Es tut mir leid, dass Georg nicht da ist. Er macht Samstags immer eine Radfahrt mit den Kindern. Mein Rad ist ja kaputt! Fährst du Rad, Nico? 

I’m sorry that Georg isn’t here. On Saturdays he always goes for a bike ride with the kids. My bike is broken. Do you cycle, Nico?

Nico: Früher bin ich Rad gefahren. Aber nicht mehr, seitdem ich in Deutschland bin.

I used to cycle. But not since I’ve been in Germany

Marlene: Ach, dann müssen wir ein Rad für dich suchen. Dann kannst du mitfahren. 

We’ll have to look for a bike for you. Then you can come along.

Nico: Schön!

Great!

Marlene: Tja, wir finden Sport sehr wichtig. Ich will immer viel Sport machen - Tennis, Schwimmen und so weiter - und dann finde ich nie genug Zeit. Georg macht mehr Sport. Der geht jeden Morgen joggen.

Sport’s very important for us. I’m always keen to do some sport - tennis, swimming and so on - but there’s never enough time. Georg does more. He goes jogging every morning.

Ulli: Bah! Joggen ist so langweilig! 

Jogging’s so boring! 

Marlene: Sagen die Kinder auch. Die Kinder machen auch am meisten Sport - Radfahren, Schwimmen, Fußball.

That’s what the kids say.  They do the most sport - cycling, swimming, football.

Nico: Ja, Fußball mag ich auch. 

I like football too.

Marlene: Na, prima. Dann kannst du mitspielen. Nehmt euch doch Kuchen. Unser Bioladen backt wirklich gut.

Great. You can play with them. Help yourselves to the cakes. Our health food shop has a good bakery 

Anna: Mmm. Das schmeckt viel besser als der Kuchen in meinem Bioladen.

Mmm. This tastes a lot better than the cakes in my health food shop.

Nico: Was ist ein ,Bioladen’? 

What’s a health food shop?

Marlene: Im Bioladen kann man gutes Obst und Gemüse kaufen. Die Sachen wachsen ganz natürlich, die Bauern benutzen keine Pestizide und Chemikalien. Schau mal - die Äpfel hier... die sehen vielleicht nicht so schön aus wie die Äpfel im Supermarkt, aber sie sind viel gesünder. Wir haben einen super Bioladen um die Ecke - die haben auch Biobrot und Joghurt.

In a health food shop you can buy good fruit and vegetables. Things have been grown organically - the farmers don’t use pesticides or chemicals. Look at these apples... perhaps they don’t look as good as the apples in a supermarket, but they’re much healthier. We have a phantastic health food shop round the corner - they have organic bread and yogurt...

UtIi: Alles sehr gesund!

All very good for you!

Marlene: Ja, ja, ich weiß, dein Lieblingsgericht ist Pommes mit Mayo!

Yes, yes, I know! Your favourite is chips with mayonnaise!

Anna: Ach je! Schon halb zwölf. Ich muss weg.

Half past eleven already! I must go.

Nico: Wohin denn?

Anna: Zum Tennisverein. Ich spiele jedes Wochenende Tennis.

To the tennis club. I play tennis every weekend.

UIIi: Ich fahre dich hin.

I’ll drive you there.

Anna: Ach, das ist lieb, danke, Ulli.

Oh, that’s very sweet of you. Thanks, Ulli.

Nico: Anna, sehen wir uns noch heute?

Anna, are we seeing each other later?

Anna: Heute nicht. Aber wie ist es mit morgen?

Not today. But what about tomorrow?

Nico: Ja. Wann und wo?

Fine. When and wher?

Anna: Du kannst mich beim Tennisverein abholen. Tennisverein Rot Grün. Da ist ein Freibad nebenan. Wir können schwimmen gehen. Um zwölf?

You can pick me up at the tennis club. It’s called ‘Red Green’. The open-air pool is close by - we can go swimming. At twelve?

Nico: Ja, um zwölf Uhr. Ich freue mich.

Okay, at twelve. I’ll look forward to it.

UIIi: Freut mich, dass das geklappt hat. Naja…

I’m glad everything worked out. Well...

Anna: Tschüs, und vielen Dank.

Nico: Marlene macht viel Sport. Georg macht mehr Sport. Die Kinder machen am meisten Sport. Viel… mehr... am meisten. Gut ... besser ...

Marlene does a lot of sport. Georg does more sport. The children do the most sport. Much ... more ... most.  Good ... better…

 

NICO GOES DOWNSTAIRS

Annette: Hallo, Nico.

Nico: Annette! Du musst schlafen!

Annette! You should be asleep!

Annette: Ich weiß. Gute Nacht.

I know! Good night.

Nico: Gute Nacht. Schlaf gut.

IN SITTING-ROOM - GEORG AND MARLENE WATCHING TV

documentary on artists from former GDR

Seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges und der Vereinigung Deutschlands ist Frankfurt vom Rande Europas wieder in die Mitte gerutscht.

Since the end of the Cold War and the unification of Germany, Frankfurt has moved from the edge of Europe to the centre again.

Doch es beginnt gerade erst, sich seiner neuen Bedeutung als Tor zum Osten bewusst zu werden.

However, it is only now becoming aware of its new role as a gateway to the East.

Auf dem Gebiet der früheren DDR im neuen Bundesland Brandenburg liegt Frankfurt, etwa 80 Kilometer von Berlin entfernt, am linken Ufer der Oder.

Frankfurt is in what was East Germany, in the new German state of Brandenburg, about 80 kilometres from Berlin, on the left bank of the river Oder.

In der Mitte des Stromes verläuft die Grenze zwischen Deutschland und Polen.

The border between Germany and Poland runs along the middle of the river.

 

NICO ENTERS ROOM

FILM CONTINUES

Kaum zu übersehen, die Bürger Frankfurts leben mit der Kunst auf ,Du und Du’. Überall stößt man auf bunte Plastiken und bronzene Skulpturen. 

You can hardly fail to notice that the citizens of Frankfurt live 'cheek by jowl' with art. Everywher you bump into colourful sculptures and bronze statues.

Eine Kunstszene hat es auch in der DDR immer gegeben, nur eben anders. Damals fungierte der Staat als Mäzen.

There was always an art scene in the GDR too, but it was different. In those days the State acted as the patron.

Ein Großteil der Maler und Bildhauer war im Verband bildender Künstler organisiert, der mit einem ausgefeilten System von Privilegien ihren Unterhalt sicherte. Dafür sollten ihre Werke die Entwicklung des sozialistischen Realismus widerspiegeln.

The majority of painters and sculptors were grouped in an artists’ organisation, which, with its intricate system of privileges, guaranteed them a living.  In return, their works had to reflect the development of social realism.

Doch vor allem junge Künstler waren bald nicht mehr bereit, sich konform zu geben.

But younger artists, in particular were soon no longer prepared to toe the line.

Die Funktionäre mussten schließlich auch Problembilder dulden.

So the officials eventually had to put up with pictures portraying problems.

Kunst wurde zum Ventil in einer total reglementierten Welt.

Art became a way of letting off steam in a totally regulated world.

Der Systemwechsel brachte einschneidende Veränderungen. Vor allem finanziell. 

The political transition brought drastic changes. Especially financially.

Der Staat als Auftraggeber existierte nicht mehr. Viele Künstler standen plötzlich ohne Einkommen da. 

The State no longer employed artists. Many artists were left without income.

Auch Günter Neubauer, zu DDR-Zeiten ein anerkannter und erfolgreicher Landschaftsmaler. 

Among them Günter Neubauer who was a well known and successful landscape painter in GDR times.

‘Das tut schon etwas weh, weil man hat sich ja nicht ausgesucht, von wem man in welcher Zeit geboren wurde. Und wir sind nun mal hier in den 40 Jahren groß geworden, und wir wissen alle, dass es eine Mauer gab und dass es ohne Schwierigkeiten nicht möglich war, über diese Mauer zu kommen. Also, man hat sich hier in der Gegend sesshaft gemacht, ich habe hier einen großen Garten, jeder Baum ist selbst gepflanzt, es ist für mich meine Heimat. Und aus dem Grunde wollte ich auch hier bleiben, ich will mit meiner Kunst hier auf diese Region wirken. Es ist immer meine Absicht gewesen. Und ich habe mich über Jahre mit der Landschaft dieser Region beschäftigt und bin über Jahre also auch an würdiger Stelle zum Beispiel bei Galerien oder Kunstringen vertreten gewesen, oder war also bei Kunstausstellungen vertreten, wo meine Landschaftsbilder irgendwie doch einen bestimmten Stellenwert hatten.’

‘It does actually hurt a bit, because one doesn’t choose the period into which one is born. We all grew up during the 40 years of the GDR and we all knew that there was a wall and that it wasn’t possible without great difficulty to get over that wall. So we settled down in this area. I’ve got a big garden, I planted every tree myself and it’s become my real home. For that reason I wanted to stay. I want my art to have an effect on this region. That’s always been my intention. I’ve worked for years on the landscape of this area and for years I’ve had a good standing ... with, for example, art galleries and in art circles or I’ve been represented at GDR art exhibitions wher my landscape pictures really did somehow have a special place.’ 

Heute hält sich Günter Neubauer mit Unterricht für junge Hobby-Maler über Wasser. Dazu hat er in der Nähe seines Ateliers eine kleine Galerie eröffnet. Zur Zeit verkauft er jedoch nur an Westdeutsche. 

Nowadays Günter Neubauer keeps his head above water by teaching young amateur painters. He’s also opened a small gallery near his studio. But at the moment he’s only managing to sell to West Germans.

,Ich musste mich jetzt praktisch auf einen neuen Markt einstimmen. Ich hoffe, dass ich hier in der Gegend Leute finde, die Interesse haben an der bildenden Kunst, das ist wichtig, und dass die, wenn Interesse vorhanden ist, also wenn man mich als Künstler annimmt in dieser Region, dass die mich auch am Leben erhalten. Das wünschte ich mir.

‘I had to adapt to a new market. I hope that I find people in the area who are interested in the arts, that’s important, and that they – if they’re  interested, i.e. if I’m accepted in the area as an artist - they will be able to support me. That’s my hope.’

Noch kämpft hier irgendwie jeder mit seinen eigenen Problemen.

Everyone here is still struggling with their own problems.

Das meint auch die Künstlerin Erika Stürmer-Alex. Sie lebt und arbeitet auf einem Bildhauerhof unweit von Frankfurt auf dem Lande. Hat es in ihren Arbeiten eine Zäsur gegeben?

The artist Erika Stürmer-Alex thinks the same. She lives and works in a sculpture yard, not far from Frankfurt, in the country. Has there been any major change in her work?

,Verallgemeinert war die DDR nicht grau, sondern durchaus vielfältig. Aber das Erscheinungsbild war tatsächlich sehr grau und farblos und ich hatte sehr das Bedürfnis immer, mit meiner Kunst Farbe dagegenzusetzen. Dann kam mit der Wende die Farbe zu uns, über Werbung, Plakatwände und dieses ganze Zeug, und offenbar hatte ich es dann nötig, wieder eine Gegenreaktion zu machen. Also wieder das Gegenteil!'

‘In general, life in the GDR wasn’t grey, there was variety. But there was an appearance of greyness and lack of colour and I always felt the need in my art to counter this with lots of colour. Then with unification, colour came to us, through adverts, billboards and the like, and somehow I needed to counteract this trend too. Do the opposite yet again!’

 

GEORG TURNS TV OFF

Nico: Interessant! Wo liegt Frankfurt an der Oder? 

Interesting. wher is Frankfurt on the Oder? 

Georg: Im Osten, schau mal... hier ist Köln... und hier ist Frankfurt an der Oder. Die Oder ist die Grenze zu Polen.

In the east, look... we’re here - Cologne - and here is Frankfurt on the Oder.  The river Oder is the border with Poland.

Marlene: Georg, Nico wollte uns doch etwas fragen. 

Georg, Nico wanted to ask us something 

Georg: Ja? Dann frag mal los!

Really? Ask away!

Nico: Tja, ich weiß nicht, wie das weitergeht... Also - viel, mehr, am meisten. Aber, gut, besser...

I don’t know how to continue this ... ‘much’, ‘more’, ‘most’. But ‘good’, ‘better’...?

Marlene: Am besten.

Nico (as he writes): Am besten.

Georg: Wenig, weniger, am wenigsten. 

Little, less, least.

Marlene: Ja, Georg. Du hast wenig zu trinken, ich habe weniger und Nico hat am wenigsten - er hat nämlich gar nichts! Hol’ doch noch ein Glas!

Yes, Georg. You have little to drink, I have less and Nico has least – in fact he hasn’t anything at all! Fetch another glass!

Nico: Also wenig, weniger, am wenigsten...

 

AT THE TENNIS CLUB - NICO IS WAITING FOR ANNA

Anna: Warten Sie auf jemanden?

Are you waiting for someone?

Nico: Da bist du! Hallo.

There you are! Hello.

Anna: Hallo. Gehen wir schwimmen?

Hello. Shall we go swimming?

 

OPEN-AIR SWIMMING POOL

Nico: Du kannst sehr gut schwimmen. 

You’re a very good swimmer. 

Anna: Danke.

Thanks.

Nico: Als ich ein kleiner Junge war... ich... will immer schwimmen...

When I was a little boy... I always want to swim... 

Anna: ,Ich wollte immer schwimmen.’

‘I always wanted to swim.’

Nico: Ja, ja - ich wollte immer schwimmen. Und als ich vier Jahre alt war, da waren wir im Sommer am Meer - und ich... konnte?

Yes, I always wanted to swim. And when I was four we were at the seaside in the summer... and then I ‘could’...?

Anna: Richtig!

Right.

Nico: Und ich konnte schwimmen lernen. Und seitdem liebe ich schwimmen. Und jetzt... jetzt liebe ich dich. 

I could finally learn to swim. And since then I’ve loved swimming. And now... I love you.
