Commentary:  Nico is under suspicion. And he has been evicted…

PETERSBERGER HOF
Waiter: Kölsch. Ein Weißwein. Zum Wohl!
A Kolsch beer. One white wine. Cheers!
And what shall we do if the police have already got him?
And what shall we do if... What’s going on, then, between Nico and this man?
Anna: Bestimmt nichts. Mensch, wo bleibt er denn?
Nothing, for sure. wher is he?
Frau Weiss: Da ist er! Meine Güte!
There he is. My goodness!
Anna: Um Himmels Willen, Nico, was ist denn los?
For heaven’s sake, Nico, what’s up?
Nico: Meine Wohnung! Ich habe keine Wohnung mehr. Die Polizei war da. Ich verstehe nicht, was los ist. Ich weiß nicht, was ich machen soll!
My flat! I haven’t got a flat any more. The police were there. I don’t understand what’s happening. I don’t know what to do.
Frau Weiss: Setzen Sie sich doch. Was möchten Sie trinken?
Have a seat. What would you like to drink?
Nico: Ich weiß nicht, was ich machen soll.
I don’t know what to do.
Anna: Ein Kölsch, bitte.
A Kolsch, please.
Frau Weiss: Was ist denn passiert? Erzählen Sie mal.
What’s happened? Tell us about it.
I went home after work and all my things were there - by the door. The landlord said ‘You – out!’
Anna: Aber warum?
But why?
Nico: Weil die Polizei da war.
Because the police were there.
Frau Weiss: Die Polizei war da? Warum?
The police were there? Why?
I don’t know why. I don’t understand it. The landlord said that they bad been looking for me. He said something about drugs.
Frau Weiss: Und? Wissen Sie was über Drogen?
And? Do you know something about drugs?
Nico: Nein.
No. I don’t understand why the police were at my place.
Waiter: Ein Kölsch. Zum Wohl!
One Kolsch. Cheers!
Look, Herr Antonescu, Anna and I were with the police yesterday. The police showed us photographs.
That’s the man who I went to Amsterdam for.
Frau Weiss: Was?! Warum?
What! Why?
Nico: Nun... weil er mir zweihundert Mark dafür gibt.
Because he gave me 200 marks.
Frau Weiss: Warum gibt er Ihnen zweihundert Mark?
Why did be give you 200 marks?
Because I fetched a parcel for him.
Anna: Die zweihundert Mark. Jetzt verstehe ich!
The 200 marks. Now I understand.
Frau Weiss: Und was ist in dem Paket?
And what’s in the parcel?
Nico: Ich weiss das nicht. Etwas, was leicht kaputt geht.
I don’t know. Something that breaks easily.
Frau Weiss: Ah ja. Hat der Mann das gesagt?
Did the man say that?
Nico: Ja, das hat er gesagt.
Yes, he said that.
Frau Weiss: Fahren Sie noch mal nach Amsterdam?
Are you going to Amsterdam again?
Nico: Ja, jetzt am Samstag. Ich brauche das Geld.
Yes, this Saturday. I need the money
Now listen to me, Herr Antonescu. There were probably drugs in the package. The man knows that, but you don’t. But the police definitely think that you know. So, we have a problem. My proposal is…
Waiter: Noch irgendwas?
Anything else?
Anna: Nein, danke.
No, thanks.
Anna (to Nico): Trink dein Bier.
Drink your beer. Tonight you can sleep at my place - on the sofa. Tomorrow we’ll look for a new flat for you.
OK?
And I’ll talk to the police. I’ve got an idea. Herr Antonescu, don’t say anything to the man. Don’t say anything to anyone. Wait till I’ve talked to the police. OK?
Nico: Sie gehen zur Polizei. Und ich sage nichts und mache nichts.
You’ll go to the police. I’ll say nothing and do nothing.
Frau Weiss: Richtig.
Right.
Nico: Frau Weiss, können Sie mir helfen? Ich will keine Probleme mit der Polizei.
Frau Weiss, can you help me? I don’t want any problems with the police.
Frau Weiss: Ich helfe Ihnen, Herr Antonescu. Keine Angst.
I’ll help you. Don’t worry.
Nico: Danke.
Thanks.

ANNA’S FLAT
Anna: Lass deine Sachen da in der Diele. Danke. Komm rein und setz dich.
Leave your things there in the hall. Thanks. Come in and have a seat.
Nico: Deine Wohnung ist sehr schön, Anna.
Anna, your flat is lovely.
Anna: Gefällt sie dir? Freut mich. Magst du noch etwas trinken? Einen Tee vielleicht?
Like it? I’m pleased. Would you like something to drink? Tea, perhaps?
Nico: Einen Tee? Ja, gerne.
Tea? Yes, I'd love one.
Anna goes into the kitchen. Nico picks up a framed photo.
Nico: Bist du das auf dem Foto?
Is this you in the photo?
Anna: Ja - mein kleiner Bruder und ich. Das war im Winter - vor zwei Jahren.
Yes, my little brother and me. It was in the winter - about two years ago.
Nico: Du hast einen Bruder?
You’ve got a brother?
Anna: Ja, und eine Schwester. Und du?
Yes, and a sister. And you?
Nico: Ich habe zwei Brüder.
I’ve got two brothers.
Anna: Sind sie noch in Rumänien?
Are they still in Romania?
Nico: Ja. (He picks up another photo) Wo warst du hier?
wher were you here?
Oh, there. I was with my parents in Austria. lt was last summer. Camomile tea or peppermint tea?
Nico: Pfefferminztee, bitte. Fährst du in diesem Sommer weg?
Peppermint tea, please. Are you going away this summer?
Anna: Auf Urlaub, meinst du? Nee. Ich fahre im Oktober - nach Amerika.
On holiday, you mean? No. I’m going in October – to America.
Nico: Schön!
Great!
Anna: Also, morgen ist Donnerstag.
lt's Thursday tomorrow. We’ll go out early to buy the newspaper and see if there’s a flat for you in it. lt won’t be easy. As you know, there are a lot of people in Germany looking for somewher to live.
Nico: Ja. Und ich bin Ausländer.
Yes. And I’m a foreigner
(She turns the TV on. The phone rings) Hier, schau du mal. Ich bin gleich wieder da.
Come on, Nico, chin up! Let’s see what’s on TV. Here, you look. I’ll be right back.

documentARY FILM
Presse aus Köln, Freitagabend, Frühausgabe.
Cologne local newspaper, Friday evening, early edition.
Massenandrang nicht wegen großer Schlagzeilen, sondern wegen Kleingedrucktem. There’s a big rush not because of the headlines, but for the classified ads for flats.
Whoever buys first hopes to gain a small advantage over the thousands of other people who are also looking.
But even people who’ve been occupying the telephone booths for hours beforehand are left with only a small choice.
Die meisten Anzeigen laufen über Chiffre.
Most of the ads give just a box number and no phone number.
Verzweifelte Wohnungssuchende, geneppte Mieter - zwei Übel, eine Ursache.
Desperate flat-hunters, ripped-off tenants - two evils, one cause.
Flats are in very short supply, especially in the towns.
The closer to the town center one is looking, the smaller the chance of success. And the higher the rent.
Meanwhile, more and more multi-storey office blocks are springing up in the big cities.
Frankfurts neuester Gipfelstürmer.
Frankfurt’s latest tower block.
All around it many others are competing for future tenants.
Acht Millionen Quadratmeter Bürofläche bietet die Main-Metropole.
Frankfurt offers eight million square metres of office space.
Mittlerweile aber spielt man den Bürohausblues.
But now they’re playing the ‘office block blues’
There is space, but no takers.
Erleuchtete Leere.
Illuminated vacancy. 250 thousand square metres are standing empty. The big rental business with the wealthy banks and insurance companies is stagnating.
The landmark of the giant office blocks, the Messe Tower, looks out suspiciously over the last free piece of prime space.
70% of the tower is now in use, thanks to the Bundesbank who have rented sixteen floors.
Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Flaute: der Quadratmeterpreis.
Everything turns on the price per square meter.
Im Messeturm liegt er bei rund 75 DM.
In the Messe Tower the price per square metre is around 75 DM.
600 Tausend Menschen arbeiten in Frankfurt.
600 thousand people work in Frankfurt.
Die Stadt setzt auf Dienstleistung.
The city relies on the service sector.
Arbeitsplätze gibt es, doch keinen Wohnraum.
There are jobs, but nowher to live.
So skilled workers from other towns stay away.
Anna: Das war Ulli. Ich habe ihm erzählt.
That was Ulli. I told him.
She sees that Nico is asleep.

PRIMA PLUS OFFICE
Anna: Wo ist denn Frau Weiss?
wher’s Frau Weiss?
Oh, yes. She asked me to tell you that she’s with the police and then coming straight in. Tell me, what’s she actually doing with the police?
Anna (answers phone): Daniels, Apparat Frau Maier.
Daniels, Frau Maier’s phone. I’m sorry Frau Maier isn’t in today. She’ll be in again on Monday. I will, Herr Lorenz. Bye.
(Answers phone again) Daniels! ... Ja, am Mittwoch.
Daniels! ... Yes, on Wednesday.

EDITING SUITE
Nico (typing on Computer): Der Hausmeister hat gesagt.
The landlord has said. Say... he has said... ask… he has asked... laugh... he has laughed… make... he has made... The landlord has said…
Elke: Na, was hat er gesagt?
Well, what did he say?
Nico: ,Raus!’ Hallo Elke! Guten Morgen.
‘Out!’ Hello, Elke. Good morning!
Elke: Guten Morgen. Hast du Probleme mit dem Hausmeister?
Good morning. Have you got problems with your landlord?
Nico: Nein, nicht mehr!
No. Not any longer!
Elke: Nico, du hast keinen Kaffee gemacht!
Nico, you haven’t made coffee.
Nico: Entschuldigung.
Sorry.
Elke: Das war ja nur ein Scherz! Komm, wir wollen ein Bewerbungsformular ausfüllen, oder?
Just a joke. Come on, we want to fill in your application form, don’t we?
Nico: Ach so. (He pulls out crumpled form).
Elke: Nico, das sieht nicht gut aus!
Well, Nico, that doesn’t look good!
Nico: Nein, es sieht nicht gut aus.
No, it doesn’t look good.
Elke: Weißt du was?
You know what? We’ll fill it in together, then you copy it.
Nico: Ja, OK.
Elke: Name?
Name?
Nico: Nicolai Antonescu.
Elke: Schreib erst deinen Nachnamen...
Write your surname first...
Nico: Antonescu.
Elke: Richtig! Vorname?
Right! Christian name?
Nico: Nicolai.
Elke: Geburtsdatum?
Date of birth?
Nico: 12. Juli 1973.
12 July 1973.
Elke: 12. Juli? Dann hast du bald Geburtstag. Weiter. Adresse?
12 July? So it’s your birthday soon. OK, on we go. Address?
Nico: Keine.
None.
Elke: Was!
What!
Nico: Ich habe keine Wohnung mehr. Der Hausmeister hat mich rausgeschmissen.
I haven’t got a flat any more. The landlord has thrown me out.
Elke: Nein, Nico! Wie furchtbar. Erzähl mir, was ist passiert?
No! How awful. Tell me, what happened?
I went home, and all my things were in the corridor. The landlord said ‘Out!’ Because the police were there. He said that they were looking for me. He said -something about drugs.
